you and i and we

you smell like rain in the summertime
and the beach after a full moon
and your eyes are my north star, guiding me home
i am where you are and that’s okay
because my greatest adventure has been you and yours me
dazed by pain and bliss and cliffs lit by stars on the water
we are forever
infinite
blossoming into the depths of the universe
 radiating
we’re perfect
deep colors resonating magnetic in our mouths in our eyes in every inch of everything
you’re perfect
eyes like stars dripping life on this grey wasted earth
but truth be told
i don’t love you.

Riot! Radio

TRANSCRIPT: BROADCAST

DATE: xx/x/2021

-BEGIN TRANSCRIPT-

Hello there, all you implosionatic supernovas and runaway superstars. Reporting in from the Eastern Badlands, this is Lady Laserbeam. You're tuned in to Riot Radio, so try to stay alive and I'll throw some news your way.

As me and my girl Rockstar Revenge were driving into what passes for ‘town’ today, a couple of dead Taskies were spotted lying around, so keep your friends close and your raygun closer. Though Satellite City is on the other side of the continent, the Jersey Enclave spits these bastards out regularly. These ones aren’t much of a threat anymore, but stay alert, rioteers. Rad props to whoever took them out, you burned clean through their skulls, and those things are reinforced with fuckin’ steel.

*burst of static*

Ahem.

Speaking of driving, if anyone knows a good solar panel repairman, feel free to drop me a line. Our RV is losing juice every day, and no juice equals no news. Which wouldn’t be jazzy at all. Our broadcast dish and transport all rely on those panels, and although we found them in a scrapyard over near Stardust Ave., they’re in pro condition. Or, well, so we thought. Speaking of, if anyone’s got a need for some good parts, the Former Jersey Auto Yard right off the West route into the Jersey Enclave has a deal going – two packs of bottled water for anything bigger than an engine. It’s a great deal guys, give it a shot.

Also, before I forget, there’s a cute diner off the 22 exit on Death Road, out on the the west coast, name of Mo’s, one of my favorite places to go when I’m in the area, giving free breadsticks and adrenaline—juiced coffee to anyone who’s a good shot. They’re pretty tasty, if you can fight off the various beasties in the area to get there. A good friend of mine, Cyanide Overdrive, is up trying to handle the situation, but he can’t hold them off forever. Tell him hello from Lady if you’re up there, yeah?

*sound of gunfire*

Uh oh.... Well my dears, there's the sound of death in the distance, so that's my cue to leave. Don't worry, the Riot will be back in a bit, but for now let’s keep ourselves away from being roadsmashed.

Stay beautiful, my laser-lit lost souls.

With love, Lady, signing off.

;n;

The little bell taped to the glass door jingled as the girls walked in. Stardust Records was the only store this side of downtown that actually had a record player in it – sometimes, if you were nice, they would let you play requests. Vexy had been coming here pretty much every day since her and Kazie arrived – the repurposed bookshop was kind of cramped, but in a good way.

Aforementioned catgirl followed her in, shivering in the temperature change.

“God, it’s warm in here. But it’s good. Vex, you know you’re way around this place, where’s the synthpop?” she asked, before promptly turning on her heel and disappearing behind a tall shelf.

“Kaz. Kazie. KAZIE. That’s the stock room.”

“…. Oh.” She came back around, sheepish. “My bad. But hey¸this whole place is all record-y and it all looks the same, how am I supposed to tell? But whatever. “

“Uh, anyways, I think you’d like these guys I found a few days ago. They’re kind of lo-fi for your taste but the lead singer’s got a pretty nice voice. And the record glows in the dark, so there’s that.”

Showing her bubbly friend around the store, Vexy quickly pointed out places of interest. Indie record shops were the best, because they had some lovely finds and, most importantly, character. There was a map of the Greater Metro Area, with pushpins to show where it’s patrons lived, and a shelf of books to muse or draw in and leave behind. Kazie and Vexy found their personal favorites, electropop and nu-jazz, respectively, and settled in.

Three hours and twenty seven pieces of vinyl, the tall pink-haired girl was curled up in a large red armchair, listening to some ancient orchestral piece on a gramophone. Kazie, however, had staked out one of the tiny stools by the door, with one of the more modern listening booths, when the little doorbell dinged again, and she looked up at the sudden draft. For a second, the world froze around her, time twisting itself into knots as she was hit by a wave of emotion. Someone had just entered the store-

No.

This wasn’t happening.

This couldn’t be happening.

There is no possible way this is happening.

Yet, somehow, it was.

After all, she of all people would know those eyes the color of smoked seaglass, always holding in too many thoughts all at once.

But there was no way in heaven or hell the random boy in front of her was Rory Rogers.

Rory Rogers, the crazy lute-playing loner boy with a penchant for absurd cars. The boy who always remembered her favorite ice cream and never ever would let you down. Back when he used to drive to the beach every afternoon, they used to joke that he spent so much time there that he started to look beachy – sandy brown hair, those beautiful dark eyes, and passion that burned like a bonfire under the stars. The boy who came so close to winning against his demons.

But this, whoever this was, this was not Rory.

She could see it in his step, in each fold of the fabric on his back, each blink of his eyes and each bob of his head. The similarities were overwhelming – even Rory’s own brother, who she (admittedly) never knew well didn’t look much like him. But the differences, though subtle, were there. Ironic tshirt – Rory always thought those were for people that were too boring to make their own wit. Weaved bracelets – from some fundraiser for Guatemalan children or something. Rory would just have donated the money, never asking anything in return.

And, of course, there’s the fact that Rory’s….

He’s…

Well.

Oh God, her eyes were watering now. This was supposed to be a grand adventure, moving on and living the life she’d always dreamed of, and now she’s crying in a record shop in god-knows-where after seeing a guy that looked like her dead boyfriend.

Well, that’s it, then.

Kazie never remembered moving. Somehow, she ended up in a corner, sitting on the floor clutching her knees and trying hard not to make too much noise as her body was wracked with sobs. Rory was the one person that she could trust, back home; he was the first person she really opened up to, about anything. Rory was the one who always inspired her, who made living her life worth it.

But one day, spiraling downward during the darkest weeks of winter, he decided he didn’t feel the same about his own.

Rory always said he would see the world. That never quite worked out. But a year ago, standing out in the rain, outside of a marble-columned room filled with people she didn’t know dressed in black and crying, she told herself things would be different. She would be different. Because living like this wasn’t living at all.

She never remembered Vexy showing up, either, but she did, and they sat together under the shelves of Latin cds, tears streaming down Kazie’s face as the pink-haired girl let her cry on her shoulder.

It was some time later before they got up. Before leaving, the girls stopped to buy a record full of 80’s one hit wonders and a German techno compilation cd. The boy from earlier was outside, sitting on the steps smoking, but Kazie didn’t even spare him a glance.

The boy she loved was dead.

But she knew that.

And it was time to move on.

For him.

For her.

For the past.

For the future.

After all, new beginnings, right?

drowning in the seas of consumerism (isn't it lovely?)

staring glassy eyed at those bright storefronts

a moth in a sea of lanterns

dear darling, when will you ever learn?

the world is an ocean threatening to suck you in

the whirlpools of despair spinning you round

undercurrents of hate and worthlessness dragging you to the depths of your own personal hell

the lights reflecting off your crystallized smile

shattered so beautifully by a single ray of reality

each fragment a piece of the soul you kept so willingly on your sleeve

dear darling, can’t you see?

this cotton candy world will dissolve with just the smallest drop

Clutching the bags of things you didn’t remember buying

but that doesn’t even matter, at this point

now you’re just picking up the pieces.

of secret hearts and steel vaults

Hello there darling

what’s with the sad stories scrawled on your face?

The things you try to keep locked behind your walls

What is it you let no one see?

But all the starlight in your eyes can’t hide the pain

these secrets like a carefully woven tapestry specifically tailored to make a maze of your mind

your secrets fill you up

weigh you down

prevent you from flying away

but without them, you’d be nothing

just an empty shell of what once could have been

things dying and withering in the light of day

flames of knowledge licking away at the strands of your secret desires wants and dreams

but wouldn’t that be better?

to stand in the glow and watch it crumble to ash?

Wouldn’t it set you free from these woven shackles around your ankles?

feel the heat of freedom burning oh so sweet against the waning day

take a breath

take a chance

and come on, take a risk

you could be more than you ever imagined

so let’s watch it burn.

ballad for a sweet summer night

inspirited by (this picture)

----

The night outside is so very inviting.

Well, maybe not so much the night as the lovely, cool darkness.

Tantalizingly close, oh, how I wish it would never end…

The cool air matches the cool edges now preoccupying my mind,

Sharpened steel against the fragile paper;

Pressing down, guess who never stood a chance?

And all of a sudden the faint resistance stops-

There’s blood spilling past the keys,

making those ivories blush,

candy red splatters haphazardly,

oh what mother would say about cleanliness.

strobes of darkness fade in and out on the periphery

heat leaving in pulses

each one stronger than the last

there’s no more melody

only the echoes of keys pressed by invisible hands

since these never worked the way they should have

always a disappointment

maybe they’re better put to use as instruments of art.

this piano is forever stained red as roses

the tendrils of deep crimson covering the monochrome

no longer a simple exercise in contrast

red as moonflowers superheroes lipstick sunspots

the world fades in and out in out in out again

and as my eyes close in delicious wonderfullovely wantedneeded sweet sleep i cant help but think

isnt it prettier this way

?
